How to remove gaps from a stacked column stock volume bar chart.
Transcript
In this workout, we need to produce a stock price, history and volume charts, but we're going to do some different things with the volume charts. So let's start by selecting the data. I'll go down to the bottom. I'll press Ctrl shift, and now the left arrow and then the upper arrow to select everything. Then I want to go to the insert ribbon and then the line graphs.
My volume data at the moment is a line. I'd much rather it be a bar. So I'm going to right click change series chart type, and I need to make sure I'm in the combo menu on the left hand side, and I can see that I've got the share prices aligned, but also the volume as aligned. So let's change that. But this time I don't want it to be a clustered column, I want it to be a stacked column.
And I'll put that on a secondary axis. Great. Now this looks great, however, I do notice that we've got weekend days not being included in the data. We don't have the first and the second of Feb that's leaving large white gaps in between the purple columns. And then in between each day there's a much thinner gap. I'd like to get rid of all the gaps. So we can half do this just by clicking on the columns, right click, format data series, and in the series options where it says gap with 150, we can click on zero.
Now that gets rid of all the gaps between Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday, but we've still got the gaps for the weekends. We need to get rid of them. The way to do this is via a workaround. We're going to add a secondary axis, and when you make it a text axis, all of a sudden these gaps disappear. So make sure you've got something in the chart selected. Then go to the chart design ribbon at the top, add chart element axis, and I want the secondary horizontal. Okay. Now if I click on that, that axis there, and then go to the right hand side, access options inside the access options, this is the important one. I want to click on text axis and watch what happens to my volume. The gaps disappear. And now I just need to hide this axis at the top because it's really adding nothing. So I'll go down to tick marks and for the major type, I change that to none. And then I go to labels and label position next to access I change that to none.
Fantastic. A much better looking chart.
