The stock price history chart featured here has a few formatting issues that aren't standard and will need adjusting.
We'll go through how to adjust decimal points and dates in the axis points, as well as removing grid lines from the chart.
Aside from these three issues, the chart is a good example for correct formatting.
We'll start with editing the decimal points.
1. click on the chart and the format chart area panel will appear on the right. 2.
Click on the chart options dropdown and select the vertical value axis. 3.
Select the icon on the right bar chart, which is titled Axis Options. 4.
Here you have four options to select from.
Click on the number option and scroll down to format code. 5.
in the format code box.
All you need to do is remove the decimal places in the three locations so the text now appears like the image on the slide and click add.
The chart will then update to no decimal places.
This formatting edit is typical to the charts that don't need to include the decimal points as they add no value.
This edit is on a case by case basis depending on the data.
To edit the horizontal axis with the dates, it follows a similar process to the previous formatting tip 1. click on the chart and the format chart area panel will appear on the right. 2.
Click on the chart options dropdown and select the horizontal category axis. 3.
Select the icon on the right bar chart, which is titled Axis options. 4.
Here you have four options to select from.
Click on the number option and scroll down to format code. 5.
In the format code box, remove all the text.
Replace with MM / yy and click add.
This edit helps to refine the information displayed in the chart and marginally increases the spacing and size of the elements.
Again, this edit is on a case by case basis, depending on the data where more detail may be required.
The final formatting tip for getting this chart to the final product is removing the grid lines.
Grid lines aren't a standard feature to include as the general rule, as less is more when visualizing data, A good example of a chart will only contain the essential details to convey the information.
Anything else should be removed.
As this clutters the chart and makes it harder to review.
When formatting a chart, always say to yourself, what are the key details and how can I declutter the chart to remove the grid lines? Follow these steps.
1. select the chart and then click on the grid lines.
2. blue circles will appear on either end of the grid lines, meaning they are selected, and the chart editing panel will appear on the right. 3. In The the dropdown category line, select no line and the grid lines will be removed.
The chart has now been correctly reformatted and is a good example of refining a chart's details to ensure it's not cluttered and that only essential details have been integrated.
