Arrows Flow Diagrams ShapesTranscript
Connectors work in a similar way to lines. So to insert a connector, go to the insert menu, select shapes, and grab the connectors. So I'm gonna go with these elbow connectors down here, and again, I'm gonna use the one that's just got one arrow on the end. So that's the elbow arrow connector. And I'm going to connect it to the top square and click and drag it down to the next shape as well. So there we go. So you've got like, instead of having a straight line like we had in the first example in the earlier video, we now have an elbow, okay? So you basically, with your connectors, the line must either be vertical or horizontal. You never have any angles from any of the nodes. Okay, let's again, let's duplicate that.
Control D, and I shall connect it to the other square, as well.
Okay, great stuff. So we've got our shapes now nicely connected together. I'm actually going to just make this a bit more clear though. So I will, I will format the shape and I will change the thickness. So let's make that two points. And the same with this one here. Right click, and oops, we'll make it two points. There we go. So there's, there's our connectors. Now when would you choose a line over a connector and vice versa? Well, here's one example. Okay, here's one example that may interest you. So if I just copy this square here and let's make it a different color. So I'm gonna make that, let's make it red.
Okay? Now, let's imagine I've got two of these. I've got one over here, and I've got one over here. Okay, so I've got one on the, one that's currently sitting on top of the lines, and one that's sitting on top of the connectors. Now, obviously if we wanted to, we could bring these lines to the front, okay? And then they would go over the top of the other shape, okay? Similarly, with the connectors, we could bring them to the front if we wanted to.
And... Okay, so we brought those to the front, as well. Now, but I don't necessarily want to show the overlapping the other shape, do I? Now, in the case of the lines, it's a tough look. I have no choice. But with the connectors, if I click on the connector itself, you'll see this yellow, this yellow blob appears, and that allows us to then move the connector. Okay? So I can actually shift this upwards. So the elbows move, and that allows us to then no longer overlap or sit behind the other shape. When it comes to the lines, we don't have that option. So that's one of the advantages of using connectors over lines.
