Right, let's put some of what we've learned so far into practice by building a company structure that's gonna include shapes, connectors, and text boxes. First thing we need to do is create a new slide. So remember, the shortcut to create a new slide is Ctrl + M, okay, Ctrl + M. Now, we wanna add a title. The title's going to be Company structure.
But we don't really want to these two text boxes sitting side by side. So let's look at the layout and see if we can find a more appropriate layout. And in this case, I think we can go for title only and that will get rid of the two text boxes that are sitting there. Okay. First things first then, let's insert a shape, okay? We don't want those design ideas. They can go away. Right, so I'm gonna select, click on the shapes. I want a rectangle and my rectangle is there, okay? And that rectangle, that first rectangle is going to be my parent company.
Okay. And it may be later on that we have to change the size of the text, but I'm just gonna keep it as it is for now. I just want to get the size looking something like I want to see. But I'm gonna change the look and feel a little bit. I'd like to have a darker blue and I'd like to apply a shadow as well, 'cause I think that looks quite smart and stands out well from on the page. So remember the shortcut here is to right click on the shape and select Format Shape down at the bottom. You can't see it on my screen there but you saw that in an early video, okay? Right. The color we're going to use is going to be, I'm gonna go with a dark blue color I think. So we'll go with dark blue there. And I'm also gonna add some effects. So I think I'll add a shadow, and I'm gonna go with one of the presets rather than do anything too clever. Okay, so I'll just have a little offset shadow on the bottom right, okay? So if I click on there, there you can see the shadow on the bottom right now and I think that stands out quite nicely. Okay, next thing we're gonna have, we're gonna have non-controlling interest. We're gonna have a holding company and we're going to have three operating companies as well. So we need five more shapes of the same size as this parent company shape. So I'm just gonna Ctrl + D one, two, three, four, five times and then we're going to just move them around the page so that they're all in roughly the right position, okay? So there we go. I've got one there. Gonna have three operating companies at the bottom as well. There we go, so. Now, if you've not got them perfectly laid out, remember we have our line and distribute commands that we can use to help us, okay? So let's do some of the distribution moving things around first of all. So what I would like to do is make sure that this pair, this one here, this is gonna be the holding company. In fact, let's rename them first. Oops, how do I edit? Remember select the shape, press F2 and then just edit.
So that's going to be the holding company.
There we go. And down here, these are gonna be operating companies. So again, select the shape, press F2, there we go. So that's gonna be Op co. 1, this will be Op co. 2, and this will be Op co. 3.
There we are. Coming together already. And at the top of the screen here, this will be the non-controlling interest. Okay.
Okay, so that's got into two lines, but you know what, I'm not that bothered about that. That looks okay. I'm quite happy with that. Right. Now, let's get our distribution so it's working properly, okay? So first things first, I want to move everything to the right a little bit. I'm just gonna gonna grab all that and move it a bit further right so it's sort of sitting more central on the page. Okay. So that looks about right there. I'm quite happy with that. Now, I want to make sure that everything's aligned properly and distributed properly. So these three shapes at the bottom here, I want 'em to be aligned perfectly across the page. Now you'll notice as I did that, as I selected Op co. 1 there, it moved slightly. So obviously what I want to be able to do is prevent that from happening in future. So I've got a few options here. First thing is I'm gonna realign them to make sure they're all at exactly the right position. So using my quick access toolbar, I'm going to select that.
I'm gonna align bottom, so align them on the bottom there. And that's moved Op co. 1 back down again, okay? I'm also going to distribute them horizontally as well. So again, that's the Alt + 1 + H in my case or remember you go through the Arrange menu if you want to do it the other way. Okay, so there you go. That's just moved Op co. 2 slightly further to the right. Okay, great stuff. Now, holding company is going to sit exactly between Op co. 1 and Op co. 2 okay? And it's also gonna sit exactly between Op co. 2 and the parent company as well. So I want to make sure these things are aligned perfectly. So to do that, I'm gonna select all three of these shapes first of all, okay? And what we're going to do this time is we are going to make sure that they are distributed horizontally. So what should happen now is that the holding company should move along a little bit, so it sits perfectly between Op co. 1 and Op co. 2 obviously with a slight overlap. So let's just see what happens. Yep, there you go. It's just moved across slightly. That's great. We want the parent company to line up with Op co. 2, so I might just do that manually actually. You'll notice as I stood that along to the left, then the red lines, the guidelines appeared, okay? So I know that's now directly above Op co. 2. And I also wanna make sure that this holding company is perfectly distributed between the parent company and Op co. 2 as well. So again, I'm gonna select those three boxes and this time I'm going to distribute vertically, so that in my case will be Alt + 1 + V, okay? And the holding company moved up very, very very slightly there. Okay. The only other thing there to make sure is that the non-controlling interest is directly above Op co. 3. And I think, whoop, no, not quite. But if I play around with it slightly, there you go. Done it with the mouse. So I've done it in a range of ways that I've showed you how to do it using the aligning distribute boxes and also using the mouse. And at the end of the day, there's no right or wrong way of doing this. Do whatever's quick. Do whatever you're most comfortable with, but just make sure that it looks properly lined up and therefore you'll be happy with the way it's presented. So that's the first thing then. So we've got all the right boxes in all the right places.
