I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an MA in economics, and then I went on to Cambridge, where I completed my MPhil, also in economics. I was quite keen to continue in academia, but I went for one of the sort of Milkround evenings at Cambridge, where I met a bunch of different investment banks who encouraged me to apply, and so I did. I had a few offers, and I ended up starting my career with J.P. Morgan here in London in the FIG team. After a year and a bit with J.P. Morgan, I moved over to Merrill Lynch. At the time, the FIG team at Merrill Lynch was absolutely fantastic. They had great bankers and incredible deal flow, so it was a very fortunate time to be at Merrill Lynch with this great combination of super bankers, super deals. I was at Merrill's for just under six years, where I rode the wave of cross-border banking consolidation. For example, I worked on Santander's acquisition of A&L and RBS' acquisition of ABN Amro, for instance. And then following the global financial crisis, I worked on some very high-profile UK restructurings and nationalizations, for example, Lloyds TSB's acquisition of HBOS and the nationalization of Royal Bank of Scotland. After short stint in Singapore, where I worked on several Pan-Asian deals, I moved back to London, where I went to work for Old Mutual. Old Mutual was a client of mine from my Merrill Lynch days, and I'd done a lot of their advisory and M&A work over the years, so it was a natural almost progression to move to Old Mutual and lead their in-house M&A effort. I was very fortunate because with Old Mutual, they had a business spanning Asia, Europe, South Africa, and the US. And now I have my independent advisory practice, where I support my clients with their M&A and post-M&A integration. For example, just recently, I advised the London Stock Exchange on their post-merger integration following their acquisition of Refinitiv that was announced last year. So in terms of my career path, I don't think I actually sat down and sort of charted it all out, but it sort of grew organically with each phase building upon the last one, which has helped me grow both as a professional and sort of personally as well.
