Transcript
In the behavioral interview, Josh was enthusiastic and personable.
He explained his understanding of m and a well, giving lots of detail.
When asked about the business model he dropped in, what he enjoyed about being part of an investment fund.
Talked about Warren Buffet and Terry Smith, subscription based models, et cetera.
It was nice to have specific answers mentioning how PE funds like them rather than waffly answers that that don't show much knowledge of the model.
While Josh was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable at times it felt a bit rushed and and fast Pace of discussion.
Nerves and adrenaline will give you super energy, speeding you up in interviews without you realizing it.
There's no issue with slowing it down and inputting some pauses into your responses.
Even mid discussion, you can insert a pause even if only for a second.
This will give the interviewer time to process the information and make it appear as if you are considering your points actively listening and creating bespoke responses rather than regurgitating a planned answer.
Another positive is that he gave a great example of working in a team critical to working in an investment bank.
In particular, he gave an example about a portfolio pitch that had happened, but be careful here not to suggest you did all the work.
It suggests you prefer working on your own rather than team working.
So try and find some positives from other team members in investment banking.
There won't be a slacker on the team that you'll have to carry.
In the technical interview, Josh was clear in summarizing what he was trying to explain.
He generally defined concepts early on in his answer, which gives the interviewer confidence to listen to the rest of the answer.
Again, it did feel a little too rushed, which can be tricky for the interviewer to keep up with.
Imagine you are telling an interesting story.
Take breaths and allow pauses to let the point sink in with the audience.
He also managed clarifying questions. Well, while there were some mixed details about accounting terms, the interviewer will often challenge you when you get something wrong and your ability to listen to the interviewer take on their clarification question and maybe change your explanation.
That's important. It shows you aren't stuck in your way of thinking.
In the problem solving interview, Josh's very engaged and use the questions well to demonstrate his understanding, his approach of explaining what he understood the issues behind the question to be, and acknowledging the challenges before suggesting an appropriate course of action was very effective.
Also in the mental math scenario, he presented his logic really well and made a good attempt at reaching a final number.
