In many ways, research is similar to the analytics involved in M&A without the deal structuring. Research is split between economics, equity research, credit research, focusing on credit, and interest rates. There'll also be research for other asset classes, such as commodities, and also asset allocation for investors. Although for detailed reports, research analysts may take several weeks to work on a report. They'd also have to respond to results coming out within about 40 minutes. So you have to have long-term analytical skills, as well as the ability to think quickly and on your feet. For large investors, research analysts will be expected to have one-on-one meetings, although the regulation may change here over time, which will require important verbal communication skills. The economics of research are being challenged as the fees are being unbundled from sales commissions, so it's likely that this space is gonna change going forward. Technically, the skills are really similar to M&A. Again, it depends on exactly what you're covering. If you're in rates or credit research, then the math skills will be really important. In corporate research accounting, financial modeling and corporate valuation are important.
