Internship Internship preparationTranscript
- Now bringing it to this year, Anish, with virtual internships, would you add anything if you're doing a virtual internship and I guess in a lot of ways we don't know exactly what they'll look like, but if you are at home and you're having to do work remotely is there anything that you would add to that advice? 'Cause a lot of it actually would. - Yeah. - Might be present, be contactable. Make sure you do attention to detail. - Yeah, absolutely. I mean, look, it's, this is a very very weird slash interesting situation during my time at Goldman and my time in finance. I've never been in involved in something like this. But what I would say, however, is I have worked internationally with, you know, either direct reports or people that I was always based in New York and then Jersey City. I have worked with folks that are based in Hong Kong or based in London and they were working on projects with my team and in a way that was a virtual working relationship, right? So I would almost treat this, even if let's just say you're supposed to be based in New York or in London. Your team is in New York and London and normally you would've been with them in person. I would almost treat this as if this was simply a geographic situation where you're not with your team, but you're still working virtually. And that's gonna happen anyway, even, you know Covid-19 or not. That's a reality that would've happened when you joined the bank anyway. You're gonna be working with people that are not in your region. It's gonna be virtual. So like you said, Alastair, the same things apply. You know, continue to use the resources available to you if you need to get up to speed on financial things you know, do that in a diligent way. But what I would say is lean into these three things. Communicate more. So it's very, very important that people, especially if you're new and this is your first internship and your first time working with this team, make it a point to reach out to everyone one-on-one, catch up with them virtually, know who's on your team, be present, make sure people are aware of what you're doing, where you are, what you're working on. You know, this doesn't mean that you text someone or email someone every time you go to the bathroom but just make sure people are aware of when you're available, what your availabilities are. They need to know once again that they can rely on you. So in this digital context, it just means that the tactics are a little bit different but the principle is still the same.
And then I would say, you know, the guiding principle would be you may be far away from your team or you may be at home on your couch. As long as your team doesn't feel that that's the case then you're doing the right job.
- That's great. Sage advice. So let's talk about the different teams, the industry teams and the execution teams. I, my personally, I worked on financial institutions the FIG team focusing on banks, and I did oiling.
