"Examples of Successful Engagement." Danish energy company, Orsted, transformed itself from an energy company relying on oil and gas exploration and coal-based electricity production into one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world. It is one of the largest operators of offshore and onshore wind farms. This was partly due to extensive shareholder engagement that also make the company take tangible steps aimed at reducing the amount of water it uses and the amount of wastewater that its operations generate. In another example of successful shareholder engagement, global energy company, Equinor, has committed to taking substantial action on climate change. This followed extensive engagement with investors as part of Climate Action 100+ but involves more than 300 investors. The initiative tries to ensure that the world's largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters take necessary action on climate change. Equinor has committed to climate-related ambitions beyond 2030, and to publish updated targets and ambitions and also to report annually on the progress. For example, it reports overall carbon intensity of energy products and services. Equinor has also introduced alignment between executive remuneration and climate-related targets. The reduction in methane leaks in its pipelines was also delivered following shareholder engagement. Other energy majors such as BP and Shell have also come under significant pressure from shareholders and among other steps they've reduced accidents following shareholder engagement.
