Publishing a Report to the Cloud Service.

Before you can access the cloud service, you will need to have a registered account using a work or an educational email address. You can create an account by going to the Power BI homepage and entering your email address.

Once you have an account created you can then publish your report from the desktop to the cloud.

When a report is published to the cloud service a copy is made with all the connection details, transformations, data modeling, and the visuals themselves. That copy is then stored on the cloud service.

Once a report is published to the cloud you can still change elements such as new visuals or formatting directly in the cloud itself, but you cannot make any changes to the data model or add any calculations or measures, if you need to do anything like this, you will have to go back to the desktop version, make the changes, and then republish it back to the cloud replacing the original version with the updated version.

Let's do a workout and see how to publish a report to the cloud service. Please note you will need to have an account registered before doing this workout.

So I'm just going to use Get Data to get my Excel workbook here. So module 7 lesson 2.

And from there, I'm going to select a worksheet called transactions.

And load it into my report, so I'm just going to create one or two visuals very quickly on this report and then I'll publish that up to the cloud service.

So I'll start by creating a chart using the amount field and the state.

Just maybe turn that into clustered bar.

And then if I click on the canvas, I'm just going to use amount again and the category field.

And I'll make that a pie chart, let's change it there and bring that up onto the canvas there. Okay. So the first thing I need to do is save the work before I can publish it, so I'm just going to use my file tab save as and I'll see if this one as transactions.

Just transactions one there click on save.

And once it's saved I'll be able to publish at up to the cloud service, so I'm just going to use the publish icon here, which is on the Home tab.

And I'm selecting my workspace, my workspace is a private area that each person will have you access it using your login details and it will store any reports that I publish up there. So just select.

It'll just take a minute to do that and once it's published I can use the link to switch to the browser and it will take me straight into the browser and into my Power BI report on the cloud so I can see here the visuals that I created earlier. I can also edit in the cloud, so if I click on the edit button up here, I can see a similar visualizations pin that I would have on the desktop. So for example, if I select my pie chart I could change it to a donut chart.

And then once I've made that change, I just go to file and save and see if that copy in the cloud.
