In this example, we're going to use goal seek to calculate the IRR for some forecast cash flows. Our forecast cash flow is here, it goes from minus 20 in year zero up to 60 in year five. And at the moment we've got a dummy assumption in there of 10%, a discount rate of 10%, and that's giving us a net present value of 17.3. So let's use goal seek then to work out what the IRR should be. So the shortcut is Alt + AWG. We want to set the net present value, which is cell C21, to a value of zero by changing the discount rate. When I press Enter, goal seek will work its magic and it gives us a discount rate of 24.6%. Now if you're not sure that it should be 24.6%, let me just show you the calculation using the IRR function. It's equals IRR. Open brackets. If I select this range of cash flows now and close the brackets, I also get 24.6%, so we can see that this is working fine. And that's how you use goal seek.
