Understand the impact of performing a BASE analysis on historic numbers
Glossary
Historic BASETranscript
We start our error check by looking to see if the balance sheet balances. We scroll down, does it balance? It does in historical year but not in the forecast years It's 682.9 unbalanced in year 16. And actually it's the same figure every year, the difference repeats itself So what do I know about this? I know that's going to be a problem either in year 15 or in year 16 Very likely a problem with a beginning balance So to tee you guys up, you may want to have a look in your balance sheet and balance sheet calculations You may want to pause the recording now and have a look before listening to the debrief So if we scroll up, we go up to our balance sheet calculations, this was quite a tricky one to see If we have a look at the equity, I can see that my ending equity in 2015, that links to E59 (that's linking down to the balance sheet) However, if I look at my ending long term assets That's a calculation of the items above. That's doing a BASE analysis, beginning (add capex), subtract D&A to get to ending (so BASE) That doing a BASE analysis to get to the final figure If we look at 2014's ending balance, that's coming from the balance sheet We should not be doing a BASE analysis on historical figures, it only works when we are forecasting So if we have a look, that figure does match the balance sheet But I want to check to see if this figure matches the balance sheet, this calculated figure matches the historical balance sheet So let's scroll down to the balance sheet, let's see if we can find that. So it's currently 5,743.7 Long-term assets 6,426.6. That's what it should be So our BASE analysis calculation is wrong, we should delete out these figures, they should not be in there And instead I should be linking the long term assets in the balance sheet calculation to the balance sheet There it is! Now the difference between the figure that is now there and was there previously will give you the amount that we were unbalanced by So that has now all been corrected
