So let's run through an example of income. Income is the payment of either cash or additional stock made to shareholders and normally takes the form of a dividend or interest. For example, GlaxoSmithKline or GSK announces a dividend of 25 p per share. The custodian receives confirmation of this from the data provider, which includes the rate of the dividend, the ex-dividend rate, the record date, and the date of payment. As the custodian, we advise our client of the forthcoming dividend and we let them know the amount of the dividend, the amount of shares they have. They multiply the rate of the dividend by the amount of shares they have. We tell them the date that it's going to get paid, and that's the amount they should expect on that day. The global custodian system will then auto calculate the client's dividend according to the holdings, and their accounts will be credited accordingly once the dividend is received.
