Gilts Index Linked Gilts Linkers RPI StripsTranscript
Here are the principle products of the UK government bond market. First of all, we have gilts. Gilts can be short, medium, or long-term securities with maturities of five to 30 years. They pay fixed interest rate every six months. Just like in the US, gilts can be stripped of their coupons, and the coupons are traded separately as strips. And finally, also, just like in the US, gilts can be linked to inflation. In that case, they're known as index link Gilts or lLGs, or simply Linkers. Let's have a look at how these index linked gilts actually work. So when the bond is issued, a base RPI is determined a base retail price index. Then as time goes by and it's time to pay a coupon and a reference, retail price index is established measuring the inflation. The coupon payment is then the reference RPI divided by the base RPI, that was established in the beginning times the coupon percentage. And then finally at maturity holders received the adjusted notional the mount. So that would be the reference RPI at maturity divided by the base RPI times the original notional.
