Learn what an inverse FX quote is

Let's look at a couple of examples here again, on FX quotes. The market is quoting US dollar Japanese yen at 110.564.
Nat wants to exchange 4,000 US dollars for yen. How much yen can he purchase? So let's type it up. He's got $4,000. We have a quote, and in that quote, the US dollar is already the base currency. That means we're gonna be able to use that quote directly. So the quote is 110.564. And all we gotta do to figure out how many yen that will give him is to do the dollar times the exchange rate. So $4,000 will give him 442,256 yen. However, in workout B, things are looking slightly different. The Japanese yen US dollar exchange rate is 0.00904821. How many yen equals $5,000? Well, in this case, the quote given has the Japanese yen as the base currency. So it means we are gonna have to make some adjustments here. But first of all, we have 5,000 US dollars. The exchange rate is what is given on top. I'll type it in, but as I mentioned, that exchange rate has the Japanese Yen as the base currency. In order to get the US dollar as the base currency, we have to do the inverse. So one divided by the Japanese to US dollar quote equals the US dollar Japanese quote. So that means that we now inverted the quote and $1 equals 110.5191 yen. So therefore, we can just do the multiplication. $5,000 equals 552,595.
