The final slice of the organizational success pie is exposure.
Your exposure has six times more influence over your organizational success and your career success than your performance. Upwards of 80% of all senior managerial jobs are secured through recommendations and referrals. In business, it's not just what you know. It's about who you know, who they know, and how compelled they are to give you their time, their support and their advocacy. Therefore, proactively building a network of diverse, influential contacts, not only helps you perform, but is key to locating and securing your next role.
An effective business network is built on the quality of your contacts, not the quantity. So consider and identify up to 10 people in your organization that could help you navigate your career. Make contact with them. Ask if they would have a conversation with you. Ask lots of open-ended questions to find out what's going on in their world and what is most important to them. Then you will be able to feed into the relationship by offering ideas, support and introductions that will benefit them. In future, they may in turn reciprocate and help you when you need it, perhaps by telling you about an interesting new role that has just come up in their department. More than anything, it is mutually beneficial business relationships that drive job and career success. So make it your priority.
There are many other strategies to help you, not just manage, but grow your career, enough for another 20 videos. But by focusing on the strategies in this video as a starting point, you will maximize your chances of truly releasing your professional potential and building the career that you want and deserve.
