We are going to calculate the market value of a bank's equity, not to be confused with the book value of equity, which you'd find on the balance sheet. Here we are talking about the traded share price on a given day and multiplying it by the number of outstanding shares. That is the shares that have been issued by the bank, less any repurchases. The product of these is referred to as the market value of equity or market capitalization.
